Ideas for a Book of Shadows… well my idea…

Posted April 2009 —

I’ve been looking up loads of stuff on the idea of what a BOS is and how to make your own. I have a book of shadows and I also have a Wiccan journal that I call the shadow journal (more on that another time…). Other people don’t necessarily need an extra book or journal, but I personally know that if I use my book of shadows as a journal as well, it is going to look really messy and annoying to read. I have a tendency to stick in photos and drawings, poems and random letters, and looking at my other non-magickal journal I can see lots of mess. But that is just me.

The one thing you need to know first off about your personal BOS is to, KEEP IT PRIVATE! Seriously, I’ve met too many people who let others know and see what’s in their BOS, and they find that after a while all sorts of trouble tend to creep up. Others may get jealous, angry for some strange reason or on a lighter note; they’ll probably support you and give you extra info. The problem with that, the BOS won’t be yours; it will belong to the two of you… (In a weird way… it’s different for everyone).

Anyway, back to the ideas and stuff…

If you don’t know where the idea of the BOS or Grimoire came from, then research it. It’s a pretty easy thing to look up and the understanding is also just as easy. All BOS are just one of the many ways you will learn a lot of really awesome things about the world we live in and the magick within. It helps to write when ever you can, about anything, and with the BOS you’ll open up a part of yourself that you never touched upon so whole heartedly before! That’s the power of Witchcraft! It’s a Wiccan thing! LOL!

Okay, to the fun stuff!

Get yourself a notebook, or a pre-made blank BOS (available online or in occult stores worldwide) or a folder/ring binder (which is highly recommended, for easy access!). Once you have that, then you’re ready to write out a few things. Oh, you can use a computer too if you like; just remember to back everything up!!!!!

On a random piece of scrap paper write the following list:
 Funky front yet inside cover page thing… (This page will have a nice picture or a book blessing or a picture of you or just you… blah – make it look funky, yet personal to you. You don’t have to do this either.)
 The Wiccan Rede
 Charge of the Goddess
 Charge of the God
 13 Principles of Belief

That’s all for now, the rest you’ll come up with by yourself! Believe it or not!

Get the list sorted as soon as possible, print them or write them. Most witches believe that its best to hand write everything because it connects you to your book and energies involved, but more importantly, back in ye olden days, many witches could only use their hands as they didn’t have computers, and so to honour and respect these brave and wise witches, we continue to write like they did. Also on that point, when the first few BOS were being written, back in the late 1700s the books used were black, so again many witches today honour them by having black books. The colour of the book is totally up to you, mine however is mainly blue and lilac with a famous painting of the maiden on the moon… can’t remember the name… darn… But it pooped out at me when I went shopping for one. It has 350 blank pages with silver edges and way too much sparkly dust! If you open it up, I have a really random front cover page thing with a pentacle and my name, and the name of the book. Then on the next few pages are the written scripts of each element of the list up top.

If you use a computer then that’s cool, you’re kind of writing yourself, but digitally. So, get that list done and those should be at the front of the BOS. For me, this was the technique I used, and it worked quite well. I gave each page a summary of my own understanding, and you should too for personal development. Put the Rede in and write on the next blank page your thoughts on it etc, and then move on, but remember to give yourself some space to write.

REMEMBER TO DATE EACH ENTRY, that way you can look back months from now and smile at the progress you’ve made.

I am working through several published books that give you a fundamental start to the magick, lore and education of the craft and its roots. I recommend you at least look at the list of books at the end as a starting point.

As time goes on you would have built a great start to your new magickal path. Read and research, crave to learn more. I hope this helps new comers to book development, it helped me!

Reading List: (just to get you started…)

Buckland’s Complete Guide to Witchcraft – Raymond Buckland

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner

To Ride a Silver Broomstick – Silver RavenWolf

Witch – Fiona Horne (possibly)

And as a great book of better understanding, Witchcraft Today – the one and only Gerald Gardner!

This is just another one of those guidelines so don’t take this to heart, same as the books, there are tons more books out there, but these were a great start for me.
